Newfoundland's Colin Abbott, considered one of the best — if not the best — fastpitch softball hitters in the world is one of six individuals who will be inducted into the International Softball Congress Hall of Fame next year.

Abbott, from Portugal Cove, who has retired as a player, helped teams to three gold medals at ISC tournaments — in 1994 with All Car of Green Bay, Wisc., and 1999 and 2007 with Farm Tavern of Madison, Wisc. — collecting eight all-world player honours, three MVP awards and one batting title along the way.

Joining Abbott in induction will be Terry Challis (player), Dean Holoien (player) and Gary Baughman (administrator/umpire), along with Jack Fireman and Nick McCurry, both are entering in the Bob Welby Memorial Award/recognition of service category.

This year’s tournament features 11 players from Newfoundland suiting up for six of the 48 teams competing in Kitchener.

On Tuesday, the Hill United Chiefs — boasting three Newfoundlanders in Brad Ezekiel, Jason Hill and Stephen Mullaley — and one coach in John Hill — defeated the Pueblo, Colorado Bandits 4-2 in a game rained out from Monday evening. Only Mullaley reached base.

The Chiefs played Denmark, Wisc., Circle Tap Tuesday night, however a final result was not available before the Telegram’s deadline.

Likewise, the Toronto Gators' result against the Scarborough, Ont., Force was unavailable. The team includes pitcher Sean Cleary and catcher Ryan Boland.

The host Cubs, whose roster includes pitcher Ward Gosse, defeated the Kanata, Ont., Storm 7-1. Details of the game were not available.

Other Newfoundlanders taking part in the tournament are Blair Ezekiel and Petty Harbour native Sean Whitten (Clifton Park, N.Y., Gremlins), Placentia’s Jeremy O’Reilly (Bloomington, Illinois Stix), and Colin Walsh (Sweaburg, Ont., Crush).
