After three straight losses, the Kelly's Pub Junior Canadians got back in the win column at the national junior men's softball championships with a 13-7 win over the Yorkton, Sask., Blue Jays Wednesday evening in Irma, Alta.
Phillip Corbett led the way for the Newfoundland team with two hits, three runs and a couple of RBIs. Peter Kavanagh scored twice and drove in two runs,
Eric Healey (5H, 3W) went the distance on the mound, striking out 11 in the win.
In their first game of the day, the Junior Canadians lost 9-3 to the Owen Sound, Ont., Selects, with Colby Murphy (2.I IP, 6R, 7H, 1K) taking the loss. Nicholas Pittman (4.2IP, 3R, 5H, 3W, 2K) pitched in relief.
Lukas Conway was two-for three with a run scored and Leonard drove in a pair of runs.
In the team's late game Tuesday, the Junior Canadians managed just three hits in a four-inning 15-loss to the Saskatoon Diamondbacks. The game was called on the tournament's mercy rule.
Pittman (.2IP, 6R, 4H, 2W, 1K) started and took the loss, with Joel Whelan (3IP, 9R, 12H, 1W, 2K) finishing up.
The Junior Canadians take on the Stratford, Ont., Cubs in their first game today, and meet the host Irma Tigers in an evening game.
