A new Atlantic Canada Reads competition has been launched at the literary blog Salty Ink (http://saltyink.com).
The competition is meant to promote Atlantic Canadian literature, according to the literary blog's editor, Chad Pelley.
The Atlantic Canada Reads competition is a play off the CBC's Canada Reads contest and the Canada Also Reads competition in The National Post's "The Afterword."
The idea for the competition at Salty Ink will be to have readers promote an Atlantic Canadian book they believe the whole country should read.
Between now and May 28, readers can put their forward their names and suggested book titles by e-mail (chad@saltyink.com).
A list of selected "defenders" (to be named by June 1) will then be asked to speak to their selection in a short essay (max 1,000 words). From those statements, a shortlist of five titles will be chosen. The shortlisted essays, promoting one title each, will run on "Salty Ink" beginning June 14.
After all five selected top titles are defended on the blog site, a public vote from June 18 to June 30 will select the winner.
The winner of Atlantic Canada Reads, the book selected as the one every Canadian should read, will be announced on Canada Day.
