Two more playoff berths to be determined

Four teams are remaining in the quest for two playoff berths as the 2013-14 Re/Max SuperLeague curling schedule heads into its final preliminary-round draw next week.

With five games left to be played, first and second places have been determined, but there are four teams — all with five losses —  who could still claim the remaining two berths.

Jeff Thomas’s rink secured first place Wednesday with a 5-3 victory over Harold Walters team, a result that puts Thomas’s record at 9-3. Even if he loses his remaining game, Thomas will still finish first ahead of Mark Noseworthy, who finishes the preliminary schedule at 9-4 after losing 7-6 to Shelley Nichols Wednesday. That’s because Thomas defeated Noseworthy in their round-robin game.

However, head-to-head round-robin match results will not knock a team out of playoff position in the event of any ties for third or fourth place. In those cases, a tiebreaker game or games will be required.

At 8-5, rinks skipped by Andrew Symonds and Stephanie Guzzwell are guaranteed spots in at least a tie-breaker, while Ken Peddigrew (7-5) needs to win his remaining game and Colin Thomas (6-5) needs two victories next week (one is a make-up contest), to stay in the playoff picture.

Symonds could have claimed third place Wednesday, but lost 6-4 to a rink skipped by Rick Roswell, filling in for regular skip Shawn Adams. It was one of three wins on the night for the Rowsell-led group, which had two make-up games in addition to its regularly-scheduled match.

The four-team playoff will decide the distribution of $5,270 of the $8,000 SuperLeague prize money. The other $2,730 will be split among all 14 teams according to the number of wins they recorded in the round robin. With it’s first-place finish guaranteed, the Jeff Thomas rink is eligible for $2,570 in total winnings.
