Peddigrew, Skanes, Thomas in tiebreakers today
Brad Gushue is headed to another Tankard provincial men’s curling final, but he’ll have to wait a while to find out who his opponent will be.
Gushue finished with a 5-0 record as the round-robin portion of the Tankard finished up Friday night at Bally Haly Golf and Curling Club in St. John’s. Having gone undefeated, Gushue will have to be beaten twice to be denied his eighth straight — and 11th overall — Tankard title.
In the final, Gushue will face one of the three teams which tied for second place with 3-2 records.
Those three rinks, skipped by Ken Peddigrew, Trent Skanes and Colin Thomas, will play tiebreakers today. Skanes and Peddigrew meet at 9:30 a.m., with the winner facing Thomas at 2 p.m.
The winner of the latter game advances to take on Gushue at 7:30 p.m. If Gushue is beaten in that one, the second final will be played Sunday afternoon.
In the final round-robin draw Friday night, Gushue defeated Peddigrew 7-5.
Had Peddigrew won, the playoff format would have been simple — he and Gushue, both with 4-1 records, would have played a one-game final this afternoon. But the Peddigrew loss, combined with wins by Thomas (9-5 over Andrew Symonds) and Skanes (8-1 over Rick Rowsell), created the logjam at second and the multiple-tiebreaker scenario.
All six rinks at this year’s Tankard are based out of St. John’s, with Gushue and Skanes belonging to Bally Haly and the rest from the St. John’s Curling Club (Re/Max Centre).
The Tankard winner will represent Newfoundland and Labrador at the Tim Hortons Brier national men’s championship March 1-9 in Kamloops, B.C.
