Newfoundland rink 4-1 after beating P.E.I. in its lone game Monday

Heather Strong and her Newfoundland and Labrador rink remain in second place after three days of play at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts Canadian women’s curling championship in Montreal.

Strong and team of sister Laura Strong, Jessica Cunningham and Kathryn Cooper played just one game Monday, downing Kim Dolan of Prince Edward Island 6-4 in the late draw at Maurice Richard Arena. Newfoundland never trailed in the game and Strong used last-rock advantage to score two points in the 10th to secure the victory.

The result leaves Newfoundland with a 4-1 record and tied for second place with Val Sweeting’s Alberta rink, which beat New Brunswick 9-8 in an extra end Monday night.

At 4-0, defending champion Rachel Homan and Team Canada have the lone unbeaten team in the 12-team field through Monday.

The Strong rink, which plays out of the Bally Haly Golf and Curling Club in St. John’s, has two games today, facing Chelsea Carey of Manitoba (3-1) at 10:30 a.m. (Newfoundland time) and Andrea Crawford of New Brunswick (2-3) at 3:30 p.m. NT.
