The Calgary Stampeders and the host Montreal Alouettes will face off next weekend for the biggest prize in the Canadian Football League.
The Stampeders punched their ticket to the 96th Grey Cup with a thrilling 22-18 victory over the B.C. Lions in Sunday's West final. It's the first trip to the title game for Calgary since 2001, when they beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 27-19 for their fifth Grey Cup championship.
Coincidentally, that was the last time the Grey Cup was held at Olympic Stadium.
The Stampeders will certainly face a similarly boisterous and hostile crowd this time around, as the Alouettes seek their first title in six years. Montreal downed the Edmonton Eskimos 36-26 in the East final, spoiling the possibility of the league's first all-Alberta Grey Cup matchup.
Fans at Olympic Stadium should be treated to an exciting Grey Cup game: Calgary and Montreal both finished with the best records in their respective conferences, and boasted the top two offences in the league.
Calgary quarterback Henry Burris was the difference in the West final, passing for one touchdown and running in another. Sandro DeAngelis added a pair of field goals in the victory, played before more than 35,000 fans on a chilly day at McMahon Stadium.
The Stampeders' league-leading defence did the rest, limiting the B.C.'s third-ranked offence to six Paul McCallum field goals.
In Montreal, it was special-teams whiz Larry Taylor who made headlines - setting a CFL record by returning two punts for touchdowns. Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo, a nominee for the league's most outstanding player award, passed for 295 yards and a touchdown in the win.
Ricky Ray threw for 339 yards and a touchdown in defeat for the Eskimos, who fell short in their quest to become the first West Division team to reach the Grey Cup through the East final.
This will mark the first time Montreal and Calgary have met for the Grey Cup since 1970, when the Alouettes upended the Stampeders 23-10 at Toronto's CNE Stadium. The teams have met just twice for the league title, with Montreal winning both times.
