A meeting held today to discuss the possible resignation of all of the province's gynecologic oncologists was an information session only, says the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association (NLMA).
NLMA president Dr. Elizabeth Callahan, Health Minister Ross Wiseman and Cathy Popadiuk - one of the resigning gynecologic oncologists - met this morning, but the meeting was not intended to result in a solution to the situation, Callahan said.
A solution does have to be found quickly, she adds, noting the three specialists have had job offers elsewhere.
Popadiuk, Dr. Patti Power, and Dr. Lesa Dawson have submitted their resignations, which would become effective Oct. 7, if workplace issues weren't resolved. According to a report prepared by the doctors, the province's gynecologic-oncology sector is at a crisis point because of physical limitations and the lowest salaries for the specialty in Canada.
Gynecologic oncologists treat cancers of the female reproductive organs.
Callahan says a second meeting will take place early next week.

These Dr.'s know there is a crisis but the Health Minister doesn't. Puppet Wiseman better have made sure he got clear instructions from the Premier or he will find himself down the road.
