The weather outside might close schools and force some events to be postponed, but organizers for the provincial senior curling championships at the Re/Max Centre (St. John's Curling Club) say it will take a state of emergency to postpone the first day of competition today.
A dozen men's teams, three women's entries
Fifteen teams - 12 men's rinks and three women's - are set to compete today, with the first men's match scheduled for 4 p.m.
The ladies play their first at 8 p.m., following the 7 p.m., opening ceremonies.
The men's teams, which will be divided into two pools before competition begins today, will play five draws leading into a Page playoff system (after any necessary tie-breakers). Women's team play a six-draw tournament, with no Page playoffs.
Play continues through the week and wraps up Sunday with the men's final and women's final or tie-breaker, if necessary.
Men's teams competing from the host facility include those skipped by Don Hawco, Toby McDonald and 2005 provincial senior men's champ Garry Pinsent. Out of Corner Brook are Bernard Keating, six-time senior men's champ Baz Buckle and defending champ Garry Oake.
Bally Haly's entries include those skipped by Lew Andrews, Bill Jenkins, and Wayne Hamilton. Rounding out the men's rinks are Dennis Byrne from Stephenville's Caribou Curling Club, Bern Lewis from the Churchill Falls Curling Club and a foursome from Labrador City's Carol Curling Club skipped by Bruce Adam, father of former Brad Gushue second Mike Adam.
Caribou Curling Club's Diane Graff and Corner Brook's Jean Rockwell join Newfoundland and Labrador Curling Association president's Barb Pinsent's Re/Max Centre team in the ladies' pool.
Play in both divisions set to begin today, weather or not
