Labrador City will host the official launch of the 2009-10 Relay For Life season today. The event will be held at the Scout Lodge in the city at 7 p.m.
Last year, the Labrador West committee raised the most funds of any site, contributing approximately $130,000 to the overall fundraising total of $1.1 million.
Over the next year, 22 relays will be held across the province as thousands of people make a tremendous impact to the health of communities.
Peter Dawe, executive director of the Newfoundland and Labrador Division of the Canadian Cancer Society, said Relay For Life events have a feeling of community and a sense of accomplishment for people who participate.
"Individuals who give their time and energy to this exciting event, as a volunteer or participant, have made a commitment to support the people of this province who have been touched by cancer," he said.
Dawe also noted that Relay For Life sponsors play an important role in generating the support needed provincially.
"Our sponsors help make these events possible," he said. Steele Communications and Provincial Airlines are provincial sponsors of the Relay For Life while Atlantic Lottery Corp. and Medavie Blue Cross are Atlantic sponsors.
