Gander teen wins fourth straight crown; Coleman tops female division

Gander’s Blair Bursey overcame a five-stroke deficit recording a final-round 77 to take the 2014 Royal LePage Junior Boys’ Golf Championship with a one-stroke victory over Nathan Peters of Clovelly Friday on the Osprey Course of Clovelly Golf Club in St. John’s.
It was Bursey’s fourth straight junior title.

Ten-year-old Joseph Cluney of Corner Brook, a member of the Blomidon Golf Club, was the youngest player at the 2014 Royal LePage provincial junior golf championships, which finished at the Clovelly Golf Club in St. John’s on Thursday afternoon. Cluney was voted the most improved player for the tournament.

Peters, who recorded an 83 on the final day, finished with a total of 240, good for second place and two strokes ahead of Jack McCarthy, also of Clovelly.

In the girls’ junior championship, Lorraine Coleman of Glendenning Golf Club carded a final-day 96 to clinch the title over Angela Earle of Humber Valley Resort. Earle secured a second-place finish, recording a total of 301 that put her two strokes ahead of Jillian Lawlor from Clovelly.

In the juvenile division, McCarthy led the division wire to wire to capture his first title with a three-day total of 242, finishing three strokes ahead of fellow Clovelly member Drew Stonehouse.

Rounding out the top three in the division was Mitchell McGrath of Glendenning, who recorded an 86 on the final round for a three-day total of 250.

In the bantam division, Matthew Bonnell of Blomidon Golf Club carded an 84 for a total of 246 to claim the title. Nash Denic of Clovelly recorded a 265 over three days to take second place, one stroke ahead of Evan D’Angelo, also from Clovelly.
