The Boston Bruins and New York Islanders will play an NHL pre-season exhibition game next September at Mile One Centre, The Telegram has learned.

It will be the second NHL exhibition played at Mile One since the building opened in 2001. The Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs met in a pre-season friendly in September 2001. The Leafs were scheduled to stage their training camp in St. John's that year, but plans changed as a result of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the U.S.

The Leafs were scheduled to stage their training camp in St. John's that year, but plans changed as a result of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the U.S.

In October 2003, the Toronto Raptors and Cleveland Cavaliers were scheduled to meet in an NBA exhibition at Mile One, the first professional game for Cavs' star-in-the-making Lebron James.

Glen Grunwald, the Raptors' general manager at the time, assured fans the Raptors would return to Mile One for an exhibition game in 2005. But a contract between the city and Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment keeping the American Hockey League's Maple Leafs in St. John's expired, with the Leafs departing St. John's to become the Marlies and the Raptors never returning to Mile One.

Mile One general manager Lisa Neville would neither confirm nor deny the Bruins-Islanders game is scheduled. But The Telegram has learned tickets are expected to go on sale to "Hot Seat Holders," who get first right of refusal for all events, in the next couple of weeks. Tickets will go on sale to the general public shortly after that.

For all of the doubters that the Leafs and Sens were here in 2003 here's your proof:

I can't vouch for the 2001 exhibition game but another exhibition game was played in the stadium (Mile One) in 2003. It was on September 27, 2003 and it was between the Leafs and the Ottawa Senators....

Leafs vs. Senators at Mile One in 2003? I don't think so. My question to you is were you there and if so, who won?

The only time the Leafs played the Senators at Mile One was in your dreams. The Hab's second stringers shut out Sundin and Leafs A Team in the very first hockey game at Mile One. Remember that Leaf fans?

The Islanders ROCK! Will they bring their soon-to-be-captured cup with them or leave it home? Finally, a real NHL team comes to town.

Fantastic. I can't wait to get tickets to this NHL exhibition game.

    Keep the events coming.

The next step for Mile 1 is to get a proper business plan in place to end the subsidy it is getting from the City of St. John's.

    LOL Brad!!

Keep dreaming. A team with Yashin at center will never win the cup.

So does this mean mad Mike will be coming too? Maybe we could square him off against Dave Lewis and have some real entertainment.
