Sides trade goals in middle frame
Clarenville, NL -
The Conception Bay North CeeBee Stars gave up their two-goal lead early in the first, but got it back a few minutes later and lead Game 5 of the Herder final 3-1 after two periods of play.
Clarenville's Grant Kenny beat CeeBees' netminder Freddy Diamond with a high wrister from the hash marks to bring the 'Bous within one.
Darren Colbourne nearly equalized for the Caribous a few minutes later when he and Russell broke into the CeeBees' zone. Russell had Diamond out of position and deftly passed to a wide open Colbourne who missed the open net and a chance to tie the game.
On the next possession, CeeBees' captain Matthew Thomey was stopped by Jason Churchill on a breakaway.
Near the midway point of the second, Daniel Sparkes fired a shot from outside the faceoff circle to the left of Churchill, beating the MVP goaltender blocker side to restore the two-goal advantage.
Freddy Diamond got a lot of help from his defenders in the second period but still came up with some fine saves on the 25 shots he faced in 20 minutes. The CeeBees mustered just 9 against Churchill.
Where the first period saw a handful of minor penalties to each team, both sides went unpenalized through the second.
