The Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts took a 1-0 lead over the Conception Bay North CeeBee Stars to the dressing room following the first period of play in Game 1 of the Telegram Herder Memorial Championship Series at Mile One Centre in St. John’s.
Bay Roberts native Cody Roach opened the scoring at the 9:05 mark when he tipped a Greg Hoffe point shot past a screened Freddy Diamond in the CeeBees net.
The CeeBees had the first powerplay but were unable to capitalize. The Cats, with two opportunities on the man advantage, were also unable to score.
Shots were 12-6 for the Cats.
Both teams were very tentative and feeling each other out over the first ten minutes, but as the period wore on the Cataracts started to open things up a bit more and found a way to collect a half dozen quality scoring chances on the CeeBees.
