Privateers drop opener to Halifax

Hosts of this year's Telus Cup fall 6-3 to Titans

The St. John’s Pennecon Privateers dropped their opening game of the 2011 Telus Cup national major midget hockey championship at Mile One Centre Monday night.

The Privateers, hosts of this year’s tournament, fell 6-3 to the Halifax Titans in front a sparse crowd of close to 2,000 at the 6,250-seat centre.

Alex Hazelhurst scored twice and set up another in the third to lead the Titans, the Atlantic region representatives.

Damon MacEachern added a goal and two helpers, while Ryan Falkenham, Adam Brown and Jordan Keizer also scored for Halifax, which led 2-0 after the first period and 4-2 after the second.

Brandon Pye, Danny Wicks and Justin O’Reilly replied for the Privateers.

Titans’ netminder Jacob Fancy turned aside 27 of 30 shots, while the Privateers’ Scott Walsh stopped 25 of 31.

In other games Monday, Quebec’s Lions de Lac St. Louis edged Ontario’s London Junior Knights 5-4, while the Pacific region representatives, the Vancouver North West Giants, trounced the Winnipeg Thrashers, the Western region champs, 12-5.

The 17 total goals in that one tied the all-time Telus Cup record for combined goals in a game, set in 2000.

    For some reason there never seem to be accurate write ups when it comes to this Scott Walsh. Also I would have to ask the question that if according to MR. Bray all the team were nervous and the hometown crowd was larger than they were used to playing in front of why is it that ONLY Scott Walsh seems to be penalized for jitters? Also, am I missing something here or is this Scott Walsh the same goalie that Mr. Bray suited up and sat out during last years Telus Cup?Something smells "fishy" here!Oh well hopefully the team keeps it together and ends up with something at the end of the tournament.! ALL the best!!!

    Not sure who was working the shot clock at Mile One last night, but he had several lapses or dozed off on occasion. During one flourish around Scott Walsh, he stopped 6 straight point blank chances, the shot clock added two shots for Halifax and one for St. John's? Scott Walsh faced 40+ shots no doubt. Game could've easily been 10-3 if not for Walsh's heroics. As for the game, the Privateers came out flat and suffered early having to come from behind. I can't understand how a host team can come out flat in front of hometown fans. Hopefully they can bounce back and make a run at playing on the weekend. I think they'll have their hands full with Sam Reinhart and company from Vancouver, 9 points in his first game........Hopefully more fans get out and support our local team, good crowd last night, but we can do better.
