Following a 2-2 tie against the Winnipeg, Man., Thrashers Thursday night at Mile One Centre, a win or a tie Friday, and the St. John's Pennecon Privateers could find themselves in the semifinals at the Telus Cup national midget hockey championships.
Tied with their Atlantic counterparts the Halifax Titans for third in the standings heading into the final day of round-robin play on Friday, the Privateers will need to defeat the Quebecs's Lac St. Louis Lions in the final preliminary game at 4:30 p.m. to move on to Saturday’s playoff games.
But if the Titans, who defeated the Privateers in the round robin, secure a win over Winnipeg, a tie for St. John’s will give them four points forcing them into a goals for- goals against scenario, currently in St. John’s favour.
Thursday evening, it was the Privateers top line supplying the scoring once again with goals from Danny Wicks and captain Marcus Power who added an assist. Defenseman Nicklas Lindstrom supplied two assists, giving him seven in the tourney.
Matt Jenkins was solid in net again, stopping 27 of 29 shots over the first forty minutes during which the Privateers put just 10 shots on the board. St. John's fired 11 shots and enjoyed three third-period power plays but were unable to take advantage.
Tyrenn Bauer and Regan Stire lit the lamp for Winnipeg with Teagan Sacher stopping 19 of 21 shots.
St. John's went one-for-six on the power play, Winnipeg one-for-two.
