After one period of play at Mile One Centre, the Portland Pirates lead the St. John's IceCaps 3-1.

Marc-Antoine Pouliot, David Rundblad (on a power play) and Matt Watkins (shorthanded) scored for the Pirates, looking to stay alive in the hunt for an American Hockey League playoff spot.

Garth Murray of the IceCaps opened the scoring five minutes into the game and St. John's got some great saves from goalie Chris Carrozzi, making his second AHL start of the season, but the Pirates are playing much more inspired hockey than they did in a 5-2 loss to St. John's Tuesday and the IceCaps aren't up to their standard of the night before.

Shots on goal were 12-10 for Portland in opening frame.
