Mark Scheifele is joining the St. John's IceCaps, but won't be with the team as it begins its first-round American Hockey League playoff series Friday night in Syracuse, N.Y., against the Crunch.
On Thursday afternoon, the Winnipeg Jets announced they were assigning the 19-year-old forward to the IceCaps, but that he wouldn't be heading to Syracuse, site of the first two games of the best-of-five series (Game 2 is Saturday night). Instead, he will report directly to St. John's on the weekend.
Game 3 of the IceCaps-Crunch series will go Wednesday at Mile One Centre, which will also see Games 4 and 5 April 27 and 28, if necessary.
Scheifele, the Jets' first-round pick (seventh overall) made a splash at Winnipeg's training camp last September, earning a spot on the team's opening-day roster. He appeared in seven NHL games with the Jets, scoring one goal, before being returned to the the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League.
He had 63 points (23G, 40A) and 36 penalty minutes in 47 regular-season games with the Colts and 12 points in 13 playoff contests befiore Barrie was was eliminated earlier this week by the Ottawa 67s in a seven-game OHL Eastern Conference semi-finals series.
