Pasquale makes 40 saves for St. John's
Eddie Pasquale stopped 40 shots as the St. John’s IceCaps got goals from five different players in a 5-1 rout of the Syracuse Crunch to grab a 2-1 lead in their best-of-five American Hockey League first-round playoff series Wednesday night.
The IceCaps can wrap up the series Friday night at Mile One Centre. Drop of the puck is 7:30 p.m.
Before a full house at Mile One, St. John’s received goals from Patrice Cormier, Derek Meech, Brock Trotter, John Albert and Ben Maxwell. Dan Sexton had the lone Syracuse goal.
It was the IceCaps who struck first when Cormier scored his second of the playoffs at 11:10 of the first period, a power play marker with Meech and Jason King drawing the assists.
But Sexton evened things just 1:47 later with an unassisted goal.
Meech scored what turned out to be the game-winner with 2:39 left in the first period, his second of the post season also coming unassisted.
Trotter scored the only goal of the second period on the power play, and Albert and Maxwell closed out scoring with third-period tallies.
Defenceman Arturs Kulda finished with a pair of assists.
St. John’s won Game 1 of the series last Friday night in Syracuse, N.Y. by a 3-2 count. The Crunch came back in the second game Saturday with a 4-3 decision.
So far in the series, the rookie Pasquale has stopped 111 of 118 shots on goal.
