About two dozen players from this province at QMJHL training camps

Quebec Major Junior Hockey League training camps are well underway, and most of the Newfoundland and Labrador who were on the pre-season rosters of QMJHL teams remain there.

There are many more cuts to some, but some players, like Marystown’s Andrew Picco have already secured a permanent place with teams.

Picco, a defenceman taken 90th overall in the June draft by the Rimouski Oceanic, signed with the team Saturday and Rimouski head Serge Beausoleil has said he expects the 17-year-old to be among the team’s top six defenceman when the regular season starts next month.

The 17-year-old attended Minnesota’s Shattuck-St. Mary’s prep school the past two years, suiting up for the under-16 squad last season. Over 36 games, he picked up three goals and 22 assists in a season shortened by concussion.

Nathan Noel, who also attended Shattuck-St. Mary’s, is a lock to secure a spot on the Saint John Sea Dogs after being selected third overall in June, the fourth Newfoundlander to go that high in the league’s  draft.

Last year, as the only 1997-born player on the school’s prep roster, Noel scored 10 goals and 40 points in 52 games. Noel also played for Team Atlantic in the world under-17 championship last winter, one of two 1997-born players on the team's roster.

Forwards Jordan King of Corner Brook and Mark Vokey of St. John’s had been with Halifax Mooseheads, but King left camp voluntarily, while Vokey was among cuts announced Wednesday. As well, goalie Chris Smith of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s has been cut by the Saint John Sea Dogs.

Thanks to Danny and his gang, we don't get to see home grown NL talent. Major Junior was never given the proper chance to succeed . I know that ship has sailed, however when I see players like Andrew Ryan win a Memorial Cup . I can't help buy wonder what could have been.
