The 2013-14 American Hockey League regular-season kicks off tonight and while the league structure saw changes over the summer, they won't affect the St. John's IceCaps, unless you count the fact the Portland Pirates, another member of the Atlantic Division, will be playing in nearby Lewiston, Me., as a result of a dispute with the operators of their long-time home in Portland.

AHL line-up, 2013

The 2013-14 American Hockey League regular-season kicks off tonight and while the league structure saw changes over the summer, they won't affect the St. John's IceCaps, unless you count the fact the Portland Pirates, another member of the Atlantic Division, will be playing in

The major changes came in the Western Conference, where the Houston Aeros and Peoria Rivermen are no more, replaced by, respectively, the Iowa Wild and Utica Comets.

The Minnesota Wild, who were the parent team for Houston, will now be the same for Des-Moines-based Iowa, while the Vancouver Canucks are affiliated with Utica, back in the league after an almost two-decade absence.

The latter required some affiliation shifting, with the St. Louis Blues hooking up with the Chicago Wolves, who had been Vancouver's farm team.

There's also been an elimination of the South Division, replaced by the West, with the Abbotsford Heat, who had been in the North, joining former South teams, Texas, Oklahoma City, Charlotte and San Antonio.

Utica replaces Abbotsford in the North.

All of this won't mean much to St. John's fans since, once again, the IceCaps won't play any Western Conference teams, except for the Toronto Marlies and Hamilton Bulldogs. And in the case of the Marlies and Bulldogs, their appearances at Mile One have been cut in half, from four to two games. That's because the IceCaps sought, and gained, a schedule that has them playing far more games within the Atlantic Division.

Here's a capsule look at the league, with more detailed scans of the Eastern Conference teams, along with the Marlies and Bulldogs.
