John Day of St. John's had a goal and an assist to help Canada to a 6-2 win over Kazakhstan and the gold medal in men's hockey at the 2013 winter Universiade (World University Games) Saturday in Trentino, Italy.
Day, a defenceman who attends St. Francis Xavier University, is one of four Newfoundlanders on the championship team, joining fellow rearguards Alex Wall (UPEI) of Mount Pearl and Chris Owens (Acadia) of St. John's and forward Robert Slaney (St. FX) of Upper Island Cove.

Goulds native Brad Peddle, head coach for the St. FX men's team, is an assistant on Canada's coaching staff, headed up by Gardiner MacDougall of UNB. The team was made up of players and coaches from the Atlantic University Sport conference.

The last time Canada won the event was in 2007, the last time country was represented by the AUS at the event . It finished second in 2009 when West players made up the roster and third in 2011 with Ontario university players.

Day, who had seven points (2G, 5A) in six games and Wall (0-4-4) tied for the team lead in plus-minus rating at plus-11. Slaney had four assists and was plus-seven, while Owens had three helpers, including one on Saturday, and was plus-one.

Saturday's win also represented a bit of payback for the Canadians, whose only loss in the tourney came  at the hands of the Kazakhs, a 4-2 setback in the preliminary round.

In the bronze-medal game, Russia beat the United States 6-2. Canada had edged the Russians 2-1 in a Friday semifinal after having blanked Slovakia 6-0 Wednesday in their playoff opener.

The men's hockey championship contest was the final competitive event of the Games.
