The Western Royals and Mount Pearl H.J. Bartlett Electric Blades both made quick work of their opponents in the opening round of the Newfoundland Senior Hockey League (NLSHL) playoffs, completing sweeps of their divisional semifinals Friday night.

At S.W. Moores Memorial Stadium in Harbour Grace, Ryan Mior made 28 saves for the shutout and the Blades got the only goal they needed from Spencer Jesegou late in the second period as Mount Pearl blanked the defending champion Conception Bay North CeeBee Stars 2-0 to take the best-of-five East division semifinal in three straight games.

Meanwhile, at the Gander Community Centre, Scott Doody scored twice as part of a five-goal second period for Western in a 6-4 win over the Flyers, a result that gave the Royals the West division semifinal in efficient fashion.

The Blades will meet the Clarenville Caribous in the best-of-seven East final, while the Flyers will tangle with the Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts in the West division series, beginning next weekend.

So the Royals win the series and Gander plays the Cataracts?????Think we need a re-write.

What an embarrassment the Cee Bee organization turned out to be. Can't run a stadium and can't run a hockey team. Losers.
