Randell, Mosher help lead Axemen to AUS title

Centre Travis Randell of Twillingate scored the winning goal and netminder Evan Mosher of Conception Bay South made 28 saves as the Acadia Axemen defeated the Saint Mary’s Huskies 3-1 Monday night at the Halifax Forum to claim the 2013-14 Atlantic University Sport (AUS) men’s hockey championship.

Acadia, No. 2-ranked in the country, took the best-of-five AUS final in four games.

The Axemen’s lineup includes two other Newfoundlanders, defenceman Chris Owens of St. John’s and forward Scott Trask of Bonavista, Owens and Mosher were named first team AUS all-stars last week.

The Huskies, No. 6 in the nation, had two players from Newfoundland, defenceman Steve Gilliard of St. John’s and forward Bradley Greene of Tilting.

With their win, the Axemen advance to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championship, March 20-23 in Saskatoon.
