St. John's sinks Wolf Pack 6-1 in Hartford

Josh Lunden and Carl Klingberg each scored two goals and netminder Tyler Beskorowany made 26 saves as the St. John’s IceCaps opened up a six-game road trip with a decisive 6-1 win over the Hartford Wolf Pack Friday night in Connecticut.

Andrew Gordon, with his team-leading 22nd goal of the season, and Jerome Samson, with his 21st, also scored for the IceCaps (39-20-4), who have gone 11-1 in their last 12 games.

Veteran defenceman Danny Syvret was the only member of the Wolf Pack (27-30-4) — the farm team of the New York Rangers — to beat Beskorowany, who earned his third win in as many decisions with St. John’s.

Klingberg, who scored both his goals on breakaways, added an assist for a three-point night that gave him the nod as the game’s first star.

St. John’s defenceman Will O’Neill also continued what has been a strong second half of the season, picking up two helpers and posting a plus-three rating in the game. Samson and Gordon each added an assist for the IceCaps, who totalled 26 shots against Hartford goalies Dov Grumet-Morris and David LeNeveu.

St. John’s continues its road trip with a game tonight in Bridgeport, Conn., against the Islanders (8:30 p.m. NT) and finishes up a three-in-three weekend Sunday afternoon in Springfield, Mass., where the Falcons will provide the opposition.

Defenceman Kris Fredheim, out with an injury since January, is travelling with the IceCaps and has been cleared to play, but didn’t play Friday after coming down the flu. Other scratches for St. John’s were rearguard Cody Lampl and forward Blair Riley, the latter sidelined by a mild case of food poisoning … With Riley out, winger Colton Beck made his pro debut for the IceCaps. Beck was signed to an amateur tryout contract by St. John’s earlier this week after finishing up his collegiate career with the University of Alaska-Fairbanks … Forward Jamie MacQueen, in his second game with St. John's, picked up his first point as an IceCap with an assist on Klingberg's second goal ... Friday’s Molson Canadian three stars were all IceCaps: 1. Klingberg, 2. Gordon 3. Lunden … Brian Rogers’ choice as the Mary Browns hardest-working IceCap was rookie forward Austen Brassard, who had an assist and an end-of-the game fight with Hartford’s Shawn O’Donnell …
