Jaffray, Morrissey score goals, Hutchinson makes 31 saves in Game 2

The St. John’s IceCaps used something old (or at least older) and something new in edging the Norfolk Admirals 2-1 at Mile One Centre Wednesday night to tie their second-round American Hockey League Calder Cup playoff series at a game apiece.

Norfolk had won Tuesday’s opener by a 3-1 score.

In the rematch, team captain Jason Jaffray, the lone 30-something on the IceCcaps, had the game-winner for the home side at 5:33 of the second period, while 19-year-old defenceman Josh Morrissey, the youngest player in the St. John’s lineup Wednesday, had opened the scoring with his first professional goal just about three minutes after Jaffray’s tally.

Both of the St. John’s tallies came on power-plays.

So did Norfolk’s lone marker, scored by Chris Wagner midway through the third period. It spoiled IceCaps’ goalie Michael Hutchinson’s shutout bid and, along with continued solid netminding by Hutchinson’s Admirals counterpart, John Gibson, made the game a little more interesting than it might have been down the stretch.

But Hutchinson was just as impenetrable over the last half of the third period and St. John’s survived a sixth power-play for the visitors, then got one of their own late to help close out — at least ticking time-wise — the contest and secure the victory.

Game 3 of the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal will be played Saturday night in Norfolk, Va., as will Games 4 and 5 Monday and Tuesday. Games 6 and 7, both if necessary, will be at Mile One Friday and Saturday May 16-17.

Hutchinson, who made 31 saves, was the games’ first star, while Gibson, with 39 stops, earned second-star honours. Jaffray, whose goal was his first of these playoffs, was the third star.

St. John’s, which had entered Wednesday just 2-for-24 on the power play through five post-season games, went 2-5 on the PP. The Admirals were 1-for-6.
