Evan Mosher

Evan Mosher of Conception Bay South is the latest Newfoundland-born player to join the professional hockey ranks after signing a contract with the Quad City Mallards of the Central Hockey League, a minor pro squad based in the Quad Cities area of Illinois and Iowa.

Mosher, is fresh off a stellar third-season with the Acadia University Axemen, one that culminated in an Atlantic University Sport conference title and a berth in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Cup national championship.

In 22 regular-season games the 23-year-old Mosher posted 17-5-0 record with a 2.12 goals against average and a .919 save percentage, good enough to earn All-Canadian second-team honours.

He finishes his collegiate career with a 32-19-0 record, a 2.64 GAA and .902 save percentage.

Prior heading to Acadia, Mosher spent the better part of five seasons with the QMJHL’s Prince Edward Island Rocket. In 117 games, he had a 50-57-0 record, a 3.17 GAA, a .907 save percentage and two shutouts.

He wrapped up his major junior career in 2010-11 by leading the QMJHL in minutes played (3,266:38) and total saves (1,694).

Jets sign defenceman Ellerby to a one-year, two-way contract

The Winnipeg Jets are bringing back defenceman Keaton Ellerby, who played 51 games with the National Hockey League club last season.

This sort  of transaction is usually of some interest to St. John’s IceCaps fans considering they involve the parent Jets, but should generate even more in this case, because Ellerby, who had been an unrestricted free agent, has been inked to a one-year, two-way contract, with separate salaries for the National and American Hockey Leagues.

The deal calls for $700,000 annually in the NHL, and $375,000 in the AHL.

The 25-year-old Strathmore, Alta., native would need to clear waivers to be assigned to St. John’s. It should be noted that’s how the Jets obtained him last November, when they claimed the six-foot-four blueliner off the waiver wire from the Los Angeles Kings.

He was originally drafted 10th overall by the Florida Panthers in 2007

Ellerby has 26 points (four goals, 22 assists) and 88 penalty minutes in 211 career NHL games with Florida, Los Angeles, and Winnipeg. That includes two goals, fours assists and two PIMs with Winnipeg last season.

He’s also played in 150 career AHL games, all with the Rochester Americans, recording 47 points (11 goals, 36 assists) and 86 penalty minutes.

The Jets made Ellerby an unrestricted free agent a few weeks ago when they declined to make him a qualifying offer.
