The St. John’s IceCaps have a second Southern Californian on their roster.

Chase Balisy

On Thursday, the IceCaps announced they’ve signed forward Chase Balisy to an American Hockey League contract. Like veteran St. John’s forward IceCap Kyle McKinnon, who is from Walnut, Calif., Balisy is from a community in the Los Angeles environs, Rancho Santa Margarita.

The 22-year-old, left-shooting Balisy, who plays both centre and on the wing, put in two years with the United States National Team Development Program as a teenager before entering Western Michigan University.

He spent four years at Western Michigan and in 161 NCAA games with the Broncos, collected 129 points (49 goals, 80 assists). That included 13 goals and 24 points in 40 games last season when he was team captain for Western Michigan under former NHL coach Andy Murray.

Balisy was selected by the Nashville Predators in the sixth round (170th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, but was not signed by Nashville.

Balisy is the seventh player signed to an AHL contract by the IceCaps. In addition, there are 13 players who have two-way deals with the parent Winnipeg Jets and who spent the majority of last season in the American Hockey League. As well, there are three more players signed to entry-level NHL contracts who are expected to turn pro with St. John’s
