NHL adds Sens-Islanders exhibition matinee for St. John’s, but marquee names expected to play in evening game

As reported in The Telegram last month, the Ottawa Senators and New York Islanders will play a matinee National Hockey League exhibition game Sept. 22 in addition to the previously-announced 7:30 p.m. tilt.
Both games will be played at Mile One Centre.

With both teams so early into training camps at that time, they will be carrying crowded pre-season rosters, making it easier to come up with lineups for two games on the same day.

As mandated by the NHL, the 3 p.m. matinee will feature a minimum of eight NHL veterans per team.

However, Glenn Stanford of IceCaps Entertainment said it’s expected the team’s stars — namely John Tavares of the Islanders and the Sens’ Erik Karlsson, not to mention St. John’s product Colin Greening of Ottawa — will play in the 7:30 p.m. prime-time contest.

“Generally, in situations like this, teams play their big-name players in the 7:30 p.m. game, and a mix of prospects and veterans in the matinee game,” said Stanford. “It’s my understanding that will be the case in these games.”

Tickets for the 7:30 game, most of which have been sold, are going for $124.50 each, plus surcharges. Tickets for the matinee game are $50, plus surcharges, and will go on sale to the public noon Sunday.

“This is a great opportunity for school-aged children, and all fans for that matter, to catch live NHL action right here at home,” said IceCaps Entertainment president and CEO Danny Williams. “The matinee game will feature at least 16 NHL veterans, along with stars of tomorrow who will be jockeying for a roster spot on the big teams.

“We’re proud to help ensure as many people as possible are able to take in this experience to see an NHL game. That’s why we added a matinee exhibition game, in hopes that as many people as possible will be able to participate.

“For most people, the costs of traveling to an NHL city, buying tickets, and staying in a hotel are really prohibitive. So the chance to pay just a fraction of that cost to see NHL action right here at Mile One is a fantastic opportunity.”
