RCMP in Carmanville are investigating a complaint from a resident of the community who received counterfeit Canada Post money orders through the mail in December.
The resident had been selling an item over the Internet. A sale had been arranged for this item with a buyer in France for $500.
Several weeks later, the resident received a letter with instructions to follow pertaining to the transaction, along with three counterfeit Canada Post money orders in the amount of $800 each (total of $2,400 dollars).
The instructions requested the resident cash the money orders locally and then deduct $500 dollars for the transaction purchase. The resident was then requested to "electronically wire" the remaining amount of money to a bank account in Paris.
The money orders were very professional looking. The public is asked to be very wary when receiving payments in this manner.
