Snow may be the last thing on most people's minds this week, but the federal government is helping some of this province's athletes prepare for the upcoming winter.
The cross-country ski trails west of Gander at the Airport Nordic Ski Club will be upgraded this year with financial support from the Government of Canada.
The ski club will make improvements to its 14-kilometre trail system to enhance the experience for skiers and will also open up the facility for year-round activities.
The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency is providing $297,000 to the project, which will include installing trail lighting to allow night skiing; purchasing a new trail groomer; upgrading and expanding the trail system to enhance the cross-country skiing and snowshoeing experience and enabling the club to provide multi-season activities such as hiking and mountain biking.
As well, a garage will be built for the new groomer and the ski hut will see some minor changes.
