Rock makes history

Rain, drizzle, fog. The visiting Calgary Mavericks didn't stand a chance.

Newfoundland Rock made provincial rugby history Saturday with a convincing 30-6 win over the Calgary Mavericks to capture the 2008 Rugby Canada Super League (RCSL) championship in St. John's.

The third national championship win for The Rock is the most in provincial sports history and that fact was not lost on Rock coach Pat Parfrey, who was beaming after posing for a historic team photo. The Rock's previous national titles came in 2005 and 2006.

"This is the best performance this team has ever given," said Parfrey. "We have superb players in every position and they represent a wide age group of athletes who have developed their skills over the years. They are highly skilful and passionate."

Many in the crowd of about 2,000 sang, cheered and gave the visiting players a little bit of grief throughout the 80-minute contest, which was played on a dull, rainy day at the Swilers Complex.

"It was a fantastic crowd, given the weather conditions," said Parfrey.

Both sides applauded the fans after the match.

Twenty-year-old winger Grant Moffatt gave the host team a huge lift when he opened the scoring early in the first half.

"It feels great," said Moffatt, who was playing in his first RCSL final. "I'm just happy to be a part of it and I can't wait to do it again next year."

Second-row forward Chris Mooney also scored one try for the Rock, which posted a 5-0 record in the eastern conference this season.

The winners, who led 13-3 at halftime, were awarded another try because of Maverick interference, while fly-half Dean Blanks kicked three penalties and three converts to complete The Rock's scoring.

Fly-half Christian Wullf kicked two penalties for the Mavericks' points.

Calgary came into the game determined to win their second RCSL title after posting four straight wins in the tough western conference, but it wasn't to be.
