Paul Davis Systems, representing Newfoundland and Labrador, won a bronze medal at the Canadian midget fastpitch championships in Brantford, Ont., Sunday.

The Saskatoon Aspen Selects captured the gold medal and Napanee Express took the silver.

The Newfoundland team, which was 6-3 in the round-robin, placed three players on the tournament all-star team, including pitcher Mike Noftall, catcher Kyle Ezekiel and shortstop Shane Boland.

The Newfoundland roster includes Derrick Stone, Ezekiel, Liam Myers, Johnny O'Reilly, Evan Greene, Vince Kerrivan, Scott Myers, Alex Power, Stephen Joy, Andrew Gale, Boland and Noftall, head coach Dave Boland, assistant coach Pat Gale and manager Sherry Maher.

Kelly's Pub Canadians, meanwhile, ended up just out of the medals, settling for fourth place in the national junior championship after falling 7-0 to host Owen Sound, Ont., in the bronze-medal game Sunday.

The Newfoundland team finished with a 4-5 record in round-robin, providing just a single life in the playoffs, but Kelly's almost made the most of it.

Because of rain delays, Sunday was a busy day for Kelly's Pub, which started by beating Quebec 7-5 and Saskatchewan 6-3.

But in their third game in less than seven hours, the Newfoundlanders ran out of steam against Owen Sound.

Catcher Ryan Boland, who was chosen the player of the game in the loss to Owen Sound, and outfielder Brad Ezekiel, were selected to the tournament all-star team.

Congrats to both men's softball teams on such great showings at the nationals. Men's softball (fast-pitch) has always been our province's most successful sport programs.
