The Avalon chapter of the Motorcycle Ride for Dad announced this morning that they raised $61,074 in their second year of fundraising efforts.
The money will be used to fund research and public education about prostate cancer in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The announcement was made during the Motorcycle Ride for Dad national summit being held in St. John's this week.
Garry Janz, the founder and president of the organization says it's very inspirational to have the national meeting in St. John's.
"There are new standards that are being set by the Avalon chapter that are being followed across the country," Janz said.
He founded the organization after a good friend told him he wouldn't be dying of cancer had he gotten a prostate exam earlier.
"Consider yourself told folks, go get it checked and save your own life," he said.
Paul Davis, co-chair of the campaign says 200 riders showed up this year to participate in the ride, and they raised over $40,000 from individual pledges.
The remainder of the funds were raised by the campaign's corporate sponsors, including Mark's Work Wearhouse, Scotiabank, Wal-Mart and Toyota Plaza.
Next year, Davis says they are planning to expand the ride into a community event to be held at the Newfoundland Power building on Kenmount Road.
Motorcycle retailers will be invited to open booths and there will be a dynamometer for people to test their motorcycle's horsepower.

Wow!! That is amazing!! It was quite a rainy day but was so much fun to be involved...a good time was had by all who attended. Definately an event that I'll support each and every year!
