Five crewmembers of the Newfoundland Lynx were airlifted to an Iqaluit health centre today from their ship that was fishing near Baffin Island when a fire broke out on the vessel Sunday night.
A Cormorant helicopter from 103 Search and Rescue Squadron Gander airlifted five of the 27 crewmembers from the Newfoundland Lynx this afternoon after experiencing delays reaching the vessel. The crewmembers are being treated for smoke inhalation.
Jeri Grychowski, a public affairs officer for the rescue co-ordination centre in Halifax, said the Cormorant rescue team was delayed because of the distance from the base and the location in the far north.
The trawler was not alone, however. There were two fishing boats near the Lynx ready to assist the crew.
Martin Sullivan, president of Ocean Choice International, which owns the Lynx, said in a news release that the company was making the safety of its crew a top priority, and that the crew's families were being kept up to date.
