Prime Minister Stephen Harper has appointed Fabian Manning and 17 others to the Senate.
Manning lost his seat in the House of Commons in the Oct. 14 federal election.
The incumbent for the riding of Avalon was expected to be the Conservatives best chance of winning a seat, but Manning was defeated by Liberal Scott Andrews.
Others named to the Senate include broadcasters Mike Duffy, and Pamela Wallin, Olympic hero Nancy Greene, and Conservative Stalwarts Irving Gerstein and Suzanne Duplessis.
Appointees will receive a $134,000 annual salary until they retire or reach age 75, followed by a very comfortable pension. Both are indexed to inflation.
Harper has always believed senators should be elected and refrained from filling most vacancies while trying to make the upper chamber more democratic. Those efforts ran into roadblocks erected in Parliament and by Ontario and Quebec.
The Liberals still hold a majority in the Senate occupying 58 of the seats in the upper chamber. The Conservatives now have 38 members of the Senate.

Organizations: Conservatives, House of Commons

Geographic location: Ontario, Quebec

Sickening beyond words - that's what this is and the entire unelected Senate.... complete utter sheer robbery. We need a Robin Hood asap! Disgrace for anyone applauding this. Manning up there with pro Fox like TV reporter Mikey Duffy - unbelievable what Canada has sunk too. Cuba looks perfect compared to us!

What does Loyola Hearn and Norm Doyle think of this? The appointment of Fabian Manning is another example of Steve Harper's twisted character!!!Every time he opens his mouth, we know that a bag full of lies is going to be spilled. I doubt if he ever entertained the true meaning of the word truth .

Any way Fabian, sleep tight with visions of $$$$signs ..........

Wow, it sure pays to lose the election for the Conservative party in NL. Fabian Manning to the Senate. Herb Davis carrying Peter MacKay's bag on his visit to NL this week.

Wonder what Westcott and Wiseman will get? Surely there has to be a cushy Board or a goodie posting overseas in it for them?

Harper doesn't need a Christmas turkey. For him it's all PORK all the time.

I guess most people can now see why Premier Williams so often stated that Harper was a liar who couldn't be trusted and his word meant less than the air it took him to breathe it out.
Senator Manning??? I would laugh if it wasn't such a sick joke.

How can Harper justify these appointments?!? A Defeated Politician, a TV Anchor, and a Skier?!? For $138,000/yr... its border-line criminal if you ask me. I actually feel embarassed that things like this are happening in my country. I wonder if Manning will have the dignity to turn-down this appointment for the good of OUR ecomony? HA, he's as crooked as Harper... disgusting.

It is a sad day indeed for any democratic society. The people didn't want him because he did not serve Avalon well but the PM rewards him any way. This is not a personal attack against Fabian but rather viewing the PM's actions as undemocratic. I am sure Fabian is a wonderful human being. Go figure.... Steve is not so unlike Teflon Danny after all. Tsk!

What a Democratic country we have here. Just imagine in the U.S.A. you have to be elected to the senate. Here in Canada all you have to do is get thrown out by the by the electorate, and the Prime Minister will than ignore the wishes of the people and give the defeated politician a cushy job paying $138,000 a year plus expenses.
This apply not only to the conservatives but to all politicial powers that's in government at the time.

  • Don

Manning did not get the appointment based on his qualifications. By choosing him over more deserving candidates (Hearn or Doyle), Harper was able to show his pettiness and really ruffle Premier Williams feathers.

Well, no surprise here. I always thought, when Harper was in opposition he did not believe in appointed Senators, but elected positions. Now, obviously, a word he uses time after time, which I think is his favourite word in the whole dictionary, all this is most OBVIOUS, to me, especially now, and also, the fact that appointing Manning from Nfld. reaches out to Atlantic Canadians, after the damge he did in 2004, calling them defeatists, etc., so OBVIOUSLY, he is looking for a Majority the next time around, if there is a next time for Harper.

Wow! I hope Mr. Manning is feeling as lucky as he should be feeling. I wondered why the RCMP were having their negotiated pay raise negated. Seems completely fair, now that I know where Harper's spending priorities lie. I can't help but wonder if Mr. Manning feels even the slightest amount of guilt. He sold out his own community and former constituents to acquire his newly found fortunes, but then, we all know karma is a *****.

Apparently Fabian didn't make enough on his constitutency allowance cruising his district as an MHA. May he never know the wrath of a winters nite in Buchans. Last laugh here goes to Harper who gets the best of Williams. I'd like to see The Telegram's cartoonist K.T. depict a picture of Williams with Mannings foot in his mouth. Poor Danny with his condescending comments about a reformed Harper. Suck it up in future Danny, you're pizzin' against the wind.

What did all of you expect PM Harper to do? He tried his best to get trhe Senate reformed but was stopped by both Liberals and NDP. IF the coalition defeated him in January, do you think they would put off nominating senators? Not on your life! Can you imagine Bloc senators!!
Under the circumstances, the Prime Minister had no choice whatsoever. He chose, and in this case, he chose well.

Good to see Mr.Harper has his priorities straight. In tough economic times and where others are cutting back. The senate needs to be
greatly diminished and the pay should reflect their work load.

By 2:10pm Robert M had it reported at $137,000, then by 2:21pm Bert from gfw reported the salary at $138,000. I guess by supper hour tonight the salary will be up to $1,000,000. What a joke. The Senate is an out dated waste of time and taxpayers money. At one time it was probably meant to be the sober second thought for the house but now it is just a way for unelected officials to slow down the passing of legislation already passed by elected officials. On the other hand I would have applied for the job but I missed the ad. Must have been in the Weekend Edition of the Telegram. Good work if you can get it. Show up a couple of times a year.
