Fabian Manning among 18 new Senators appointed

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has appointed Fabian Manning and 17 others to the Senate.
Manning lost his seat in the House of Commons in the Oct. 14 federal election.
The incumbent for the riding of Avalon was expected to be the Conservatives best chance of winning a seat, but Manning was defeated by Liberal Scott Andrews.
Others named to the Senate include broadcasters Mike Duffy, and Pamela Wallin, Olympic hero Nancy Greene, and Conservative Stalwarts Irving Gerstein and Suzanne Duplessis.
Appointees will receive a $134,000 annual salary until they retire or reach age 75, followed by a very comfortable pension. Both are indexed to inflation.
Harper has always believed senators should be elected and refrained from filling most vacancies while trying to make the upper chamber more democratic. Those efforts ran into roadblocks erected in Parliament and by Ontario and Quebec.
The Liberals still hold a majority in the Senate occupying 58 of the seats in the upper chamber. The Conservatives now have 38 members of the Senate.

The appointment of Fabian Manning is another example of Steve Harper's twisted character!!!Every time he opens his mouth, we know that a bag full of lies is going to be spilled. Wow, it sure pays to lose the election for the Conservative party in NL. Fabian Manning to the Senate. Herb Davis carrying Peter MacKay's bag on his visit to NL this week.

Wonder what Westcott and Wiseman will get? Surely there has to be a cushy Board or a goodie posting overseas in it for them?

Harper doesn't need a Christmas turkey. For him it's all PORK all the time.

Senator Manning??? I would laugh if it wasn't such a sick joke.

How can Harper justify these appointments?!? A Defeated Politician, a TV Anchor, and a Skier?!? For $138,000/yr... its border-line criminal if you ask me. I actually feel embarassed that things like this are happening in my country. I wonder if Manning will have the dignity to turn-down this appointment for the good of OUR ecomony? HA, he's as crooked as Harper... disgusting.

It is a sad day indeed for any democratic society. The people didn't want him because he did not serve Avalon well but the PM rewards him any way. This is not a personal attack against Fabian but rather viewing the PM's actions as undemocratic. I am sure Fabian is a wonderful human being. Go figure.... What a Democratic country we have here. Just imagine in the U.S.A. you have to be elected to the senate. Here in Canada all you have to do is get thrown out by the by the electorate, and the Prime Minister will than ignore the wishes of the people and give the defeated politician a cushy job paying $138,000 a year plus expenses.
This apply not only to the conservatives but to all politicial powers that's in government at the time.

Well, no surprise here. I always thought, when Harper was in opposition he did not believe in appointed Senators, but elected positions. Now, obviously, a word he uses time after time, which I think is his favourite word in the whole dictionary, all this is most OBVIOUS, to me, especially now, and also, the fact that appointing Manning from Nfld. reaches out to Atlantic Canadians, after the damge he did in 2004, calling them defeatists, etc., so OBVIOUSLY, he is looking for a Majority the next time around, if there is a next time for Harper.

Last laugh here goes to Harper who gets the best of Williams. I'd like to see The Telegram's cartoonist K.T. depict a picture of Williams with Mannings foot in his mouth. WOW, looks like the salary is really indexed. When the story broke at 2:03pm it was reported by The Telegram to be $134,000. By 2:10pm Robert M had it reported at $137,000, then by 2:21pm Bert from gfw reported the salary at $138,000. I guess by supper hour tonight the salary will be up to $1,000,000. Way to go Stephen Harper, this is almost as good as winning the lottery. Lucky Fabian.

Tough economic times! Not in Harpers court from the likes of this.

But the darn system stinks. Regardless of the reasons, the electorate says We don't want this guy! And yet the PM goes and gives him a cushy position for life or 75 which ever comes first.

And the sad reality of it is, that it doesn't make any difference which political stripe we have in power. The same holds true. Buddies, ex-MPs and MHAs getting a high paying job.

Time to make it an election issue people. If don't want the senate, or at least not in the form it is in now, write or e-mail your MP and express total disgust with this sort of patronage.

What a joke. The Senate is an out dated waste of time and taxpayers money. At one time it was probably meant to be the sober second thought for the house but now it is just a way for unelected officials to slow down the passing of legislation already passed by elected officials. On the other hand I would have applied for the job but I missed the ad. Must have been in the Weekend Edition of the Telegram. Good work if you can get it. Show up a couple of times a year. Jet around the country with an expense account. Accountable to no one. Collect your pay. Can't get fired.

I've known Fabian for several years. He's a good man and deserving of such honours. Let's hope a younger senator can bring fresh ideas to the senate.

I feel embarassed for all of you on here applauding this. It just goes to show the ignorance that many Newfoundlanders have towards politics... If I lose an election, will you give me that much of your tax dollars per year? Didnt think so. If you feel bad for Manning (even though he sold us out), then he really has the wool pulled over your eyes.

I am very pleased to see that Fabian was appointed to the Senate. You deserve it.

I WAS THINKING IT WOULD BE MR.HEARN OR MR. DOYLE BUT MR. MANNING IS A GOOD CHOICE AS WELL. I KNOW THE PM IS AGAINST AN APPOINTED SENATE BUT WHY SHOULDN'T HE APPOINT HIS OWN PEOPLE. IF HE IS DEFEATED ON THE NEXT BUDGET AND REPLACED BY THE LIBERALS OR A COALITION YOU CAN BE SURE THEY WILL APPOINT 18 OF THEIR OWN. GOOD LUCK TO YOU MR. MANNING YOU DESERVE YOUR POST.
