Provincial Women's Curling Championship

Defending Scotties provincial ladies' curling champion Heather Strong of the Re/Max Centre (St. John's Curling Club) is alone atop the standings after the second day of competition at the 2009 championship at the Bally Haly Curling Club in St. John's.

Facing Barb Pinsent Thursday, Strong and company's registered two-points in each of the first, fifth and seventh ends in a 7-3 win.

In other Draw 3 games, Shelley Nichols lost her second in a row, falling 6-4 to Stacie Deveraux's Bally Haly foursome, and Cindy Miller scored two in the tenth to give her rink a 6-5 win over Susan Hannan.

Draw 4 action saw Barb Pinsent quickly dispose of Michelle Jewer, 9-1 in six ends, highlighted by back-to-back scores of three in the fifth and sixth ends; Devereaux downed Miller 5-3; and Hannan got her first win by defeating Nichols 10-9 in 11 ends after Nichols scored three with the hammer in the 10th to tie the score

Play continues today for the seven entries - all from St. John's, out of either Bally Haly or the Re/Max Centre - with Draw 5 at 10 a.m. and Draw 6 starting at 5 p.m. The final draw is set for Saturday morning.

Any necessary tie-breakers and semifinals are scheduled for later that same day, with the final set to go at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. on Sunday, depending on whether the top team gets through the round-robin undefeated. In that case, it needs to be beaten twice.

The winner will represent Newfoundland and Labrador at the Canadian Scotties championship Feb. 21- March 1 in Victoria, B.C.
