Two men riding on the same snowmobile went into the water on Duley Lake near the Wabush Mines site in Labador early Wednesday morning.
Both men were able to get out of the water and sought shelter from the -35 C windchill in a nearby heated generator shed until help arrived.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary in Labrador West said they responded to the call about 5:28 a.m. Wednesday. The men used a cellphone to call Wabush Mines security who sent employees to assist the men who were in good condition when they arrived.
The RNC says the operator of the snowmobile claims he was following tracks at the time and drove into the water. There were snowmobile tracks leading into and away from the open water which indicates that a snowmobile was "skimming" across this open water.
The RNC warns all snowmobilers that this type of activity is very dangerous and to use extreme caution when operating on or around any bodies of water.
