People in Black Tickle are being warned about a polar bear roaming the area.
The Department of Natural Resources is warning people there about a polar bear sighting early Monday, during which the bear approached a man near his home. Officials believe the bear is wounded and was last seen on Spotted Island, which is uninhabited and not reachable by boat or snowmobile at this time of the year.
Conservation officers are presently conducting regular patrols in and around Black Tickle. The department encourages people in the area to properly store garbage and request that seal carcasses aren't stored near areas usually frequented by the public to help reduce the potential for a confrontation with the bears. If anyone encounters a polar bear, they should:
• Remain calm
• Give the bear(s) space
• Back away slowly, never run
• If you must speak, do so calmly and firmly
• Avoid direct eye contact with the bear(s)
Anyone sighting polar bears is asked to please contact the Happy Valley-Goose Bay Forest Management Office at 709-896-3405.
