Wildlife officials in northern Newfoundland tranquilized and later killed a polar bear that was spotted near the town of St. Anthony after a vet determined the animal was badly injured and was unlikely to recover.
The medium-size bear was spotted Wednesday lying near a highway about five kilometres from the community of 2,500.
Witnesses said the bear appeared to be having problems with its hind legs, and blood was spotted near the bear's tracks.
Despite blowing snow, a helicopter was brought in today and a wildlife official fired a tranquilizer dart at the animal, said Aaron Beswick, a reporter with the Northern Pen, the local weekly newspaper.
The 360-kilogram bear had not moved for almost an entire day.
Once the veterinarian determined the animal was badly injured, it was hoisted over a nearby hill and shot, said Beswick.
