kayakers, canoeists and other small boaters with small watercraft will be on Octagon Pond in Paradise Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. to learn safe boating practices.
Kayak Newfoundland and Labrador (KNL), along with the Tumblehome Canoe Club and Avalon Dragon Boating, have planned a full afternoon of exhibits and activities promoting safe recreational boating.
"Our goal," said KNL President Alex McGruer, "is that every time someone goes out on the water, whether it's a family out on the pond for a few hours or a weeks-long expedition round the coast, it should be both fun and safe."
The activities will be supported by a grant from the federal Office of Boating Safety, along with the Town of Paradise, Coast 101.1FM and Mountain Equipment Co-op.
Activities will include on-water demonstrations and rides in both canoes and kayaks. On display will the RNC's First Response Craft. On shore, there will be safety displays and the Paradise Kinettes will be making refreshments available.
Event organizer Craig Moores explained, "Come prepared to get wet, and you just might! Or you can watch and learn from shore. Whatever way, you are sure to have a great time and learn about having fun on the water!"
Admission is free.
