If the Royal St. John's Regatta time trials are any indication, there will be a tight three-way battle for the female championship at Quidi Vidi Lake come the first Wednesday in August, but the male championship might be a far different story.
Only about two seconds separated the three fastest senior female crews in Saturday's trials, with John Atkins Marketing recording the fastest time of five minutes and 5.53 seconds. Smith Stockley (5:07.08) and North Atlantic (5:07.59) round out the top three.
Among senior male crews, East Coast Maintenance Services had by far the best time, a 9:28.09, which was more than 12 seconds faster than the next quickest entry, Lambs Rum (9:40.23).
It's interesting to note that if Saturday's results were duplicated on Aug. 5, then an intermediate crew, Power Vac, would make the women's championship race with the fifth fastest time, while a masters crew, Mask Inc., would earn a berth in the male final, again as the fifth seed.
The time trials are used to determine the schedule for the Regatta, allowing - for the most part - crews in the same divisions and with comparable trials results to be placed in individual races.
A total of 73 crews were entered in the time trials, with 38 - or more than half of them - in the senior female division. There were 21 senior men's crews.
