A 64-year-old man is dead after falling into the Exploits River early this morning.
Reginald Smart was from Botwood and was fishing with a friend when he fell into the river.
Police were called to the Sir Robert Bond Bridge outside of Bishop's Falls around 5:45 a.m. where they were told that Smart had fallen out of his 12-foot aluminum boat.
Sgt. Rus Thibault of the Grand Falls-Windsor detachment of the RCMP confirmed that Smart was wearing a life jacket, which was later found further down the river. Thibault says the jacket was likely unfastened so that Smart could access fishing gear inside his pockets.
