Concern over the H1N1 influenza virus has forced the postponement of provincial school sports tournaments, including the popular VolleyFest event.
Education Minister Darin King has ordered school officials to cancel all tournaments and other events scheduled for the next two weeks that would take kids out of their communities.
The Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association (NLVA), in a statement Thursday, confirmed that due to a high number of teams opting not to attend the VolleyFest due to H1N1, the NLVA executive has decided to postpone the competition.
NLVA will be looking to early January for rescheduling the VolleyFest, said provincial volleyball executive director Russell Jackson.
"A large number of teams have been consulting doctors and health officials in their regions and they have made the decision not to attend due to the risk of H1N1," said Jackson.
"There are also a number of teams that have sick athletes and do not have enough athletes to attend," he added.
VolleyFest 2009, which was scheduled for this weekend, initially had a record number of teams registered.
With over 2,500 athletes, coaches and officials, VolleyFest is the largest school-based event in Canada. There were 159 teams in 11 divisions set to go this year.
