A pair of soccer players, a MUN varsity swimmer and major midget hockey player were voted Molson St. John's athletes of the month for the October and November Thursday.
The names of the winners were announced in an evening function at the Dock on George Street.
Taking female honours for October was provincial under-14 soccer player Jane Pope. At this fall's national championships in North Sydney, N.S,. Pope scored seven goals in four games - four in a 7-0 win over New Brunswick - to lead the Newfoundland and Labrador team in scoring.
Pope's 27 vote points were three better than runner-up Hannah Rivkin, another soccer player, The third-place finisher was runner Janelle Miller (5).
Five points are awarded for a first-place vote, three for second and one for a third-place ballot.
Holy Cross goalkeeper Scott Edwards was voted the top male athlete for October. The Marystown native was named top goalie at this fall's BMO Challenge Cup senior men's nationals after allowing just two goals in four games.
Edwards received 23 total points, to finish ahead of a couple of pitchers, softball's Sean Cleary (15) and baseball's Peter Fifield (12).
November's male athlete of the month is St. John major midget Fog Devils forward Zach O'Brien. The St. John's native notched nine goals and nine assists in six games to help the Foggies to their second Monctonian AAA Challenge title in four years. In provincial league play through the month, O'Brien led all scorers with 10 goals and six assists in six games.
O'Brien was voted first with 39 points, with St. John's junior hockey rookie Shane Boland (14) finishing second and MUN swimmer David Forbes in third.
Memorial University Sea Hawks sophomore swimmer Kelsie Rogers was voted the top female for November. The Wabush native finished first and set personal bests in the 50- and 100-metre freestyle events (27.59 and 1:00.72 respectively) in a meet against the University of Alberta Longhorns. Rogers finished second in the 50-metre backstroke, and third in both the 50 and 100-metre butterfly.
Rogers earned top spot with 28 points, seven more MUN basketball's Ally Forsey. MUN volleyball's Sasha Wilkins was third (20).

I worked with Scott at The Strand Lounge in the 90's (gulp- I'm telling my age now). Not only is he a supreme athlete, he is a true gentleman. Congrats Scott!!
