Metis Nation president Chris Montague says the opening of Phase 3 of the Trans-Labrador Highway is the greatest Christmas surprise in the history of Labrador.
"The road connects people right across Labrador," he said. "This Christmas season families are reunited. Parents and grandparents who would only hear the voices of their loved one on a phone can finally embrace and interact in a way they could only dream of before the road. The road opens up economic possibilities, such as tourism and commerce. The beauty of Labrador is now open for the world to enjoy."
According to a news release, Montague notes the road brings its challenges and responsibilities. The fish spawning areas of the upper river areas, which were formerly remote, must be monitored. The beauty and grandeur of the land and the wildlife must not only be enjoyed but be preserved.
Meantime, Happy Valley-Goose Bay Mayor Leo Abbass said the opening of the highway is a great accomplishment.
"Not only will the flow of goods and services in and out of our community be enhanced, but it completes the circle route joining the mainland to the island portion of the province," Abbass said. "It provides the opportunity for friends and family, from near and far, the freedom to travel to and from our community on their own schedule."

Labrador is still not open until the north coast is successful in getting a link... I agree that this is a step in the right direction, but I have to ask, why have we settled for nothing short of pavement ? The island portion of the province would never accept this second-hand standard... still a long way to go before we ever see the thoughts of Montague and other comes to fruition... with out a world class highway, Labrador will still be far behind the rest of the country in enticing people to come over gravel roads and risk their lives, and with no amenities along the way just adds to the reasons why people will stay away...
