Memorial Sea-Hawks' captain Jason Shepherd believes his teammates haven't given up on the season, despite MUN's 1-9 record at the halfway point of the AUS campaign.

The Sea-Hawks lost twice last weekend to UPEI Panthers - by 19 points Saturday and by 42 Sunday - and coach Peter Benoite appears to have reached his boiling point.

"We came out strong in the first quarter of the first game, but the second and third quarters have been a problem for us all season," said Shepherd. (MUN was outscored 28-12 in the third quarter and 27-16 in the fourth quarter of Saturday's game in Charlottetown.)

"I saw a lot of effort at times, but we lost by 40 in the second game, so, yeah, you don't want guys giving up or anything like that. But I don't think the team has given up. Not at all," Shepherd added emphatically, though not convincingly.

"We had a rough game (last Sunday) and things didn't go our way, but to say that our team gave up...I dunno, it's tough to say."

Shepherd led MUN with 22 points Saturday. He scored eight points in 16 minutes Sunday before fouling out in the final quarter.

The third-year wing from Nova Scotia said the team has held "a couple of small players-only meetings" already this season, but a longer one is "definitely an option for sure."

Shepherd admits "every game for the rest of the season is going to be pretty big," as the Sea-Hawks look to earn one of the six playoff spots available in the eight-team conference.

"I think we can play with any of these teams if we come out and play a full 40 minutes. That's our problem. We're not doing that now.

"We've got 10 games left and lots of points left, so we just need to pull up or socks and go on from here."
