In the end it was no contest. Brad Gushue made quick work of Bally Haly clubmate Alex Smith Sunday in winning the Labatt Tankard provincial men's curling championship 8-2 in six ends.
Gushue and his rink of Mark Nichols, Ryan Fry and Jamie Korab jumped out to a 4-1 lead after four ends and Smith conceded after Gushue put up three on the board in the sixth end at the Bally Haly Golf and Curling Club.
Gushue becomes the first skip in provincial curling history to win four consecutive Tankards. It was his seventh provincial title in eight years.
The Gushue foursome, which went 7-1 in round robin play, will now represent Newfoundland and Labrador at the Brier March 6-14 in Halifax, N.S.
The Smith rink of Rick Rowsell, Randy Turpin and Craig Dowden advanced to the final with a 10-5 semifinal win over Andrew Symonds of the Re/Max Centre Saturday.
Symonds got a shot at Smith by beating Matt Blandford of Re/Max 9-3 in Saturday's tiebreaker.
