Newfoundland Power crews are struggling to get power turned back on in the Conception Bay North and Bonavista Peninsula areas as bad weather hampers their efforts.
Michelle Coughlan, a spokeswoman for Newfoundland Power, says it will take longer to restore power than first thought.
She says seven transmission lines are affected by a continuing ice storm that has knocked out power to a good portion of the Conception Bay North area and the Bonavista Peninsula.
As a temporary measure, starting Sunday evening Newfoundland Power will start running temporary power generators and will be diverting power from any available hydro sources for use in the two affected areas.
There won't be enough capacity for all the households in the area, meaning residents will face rotating outages. They will get power for two to three hours, before it's diverted to the next area.
Coughlan is saying that power will likely be restored to the Conception Bay area by Monday night, while the Bonavista Peninsula will possibly get its power back Tuesday evening.
Because the storm is still hovering over the area, however, Coughlan wouldn't rule out the possibility of longer outages for some areas.
Newfoundland Power will continue to update its website as work is done and further updates will be posted here as they become available.

el Chepo Way ... put your brain in gear before you type, for the love of pete! Imaging digging in our terrain to put underground wires around the island! Have you ever flown over this great land?
And above ground conduit?!? Like, no sleet or freezing rain will stick to that either!?! And who do you think will pay for all of that very expensive and flawed design....ratepayers of course. Then you'll be complaining about the power rates! Unbelieveable. Any more bright ideas? -

My prayers and thoughts are with the families whose lives have been affected by the ice storm. The Island has been truly bombarded thiswinter with severe weather and we haveto be hopeful Spring will be here soon.

In cities and towns on sewer and water, the ground is already excavated when they lay the pipes under the roadways. It's in these areas, not the major overland trunks, where most of the problems occur. So where's the extra expense ? A groundlevel metal tranformer box versus a wooden pole ? We're talking pennies here.

Too bad NL Power uses the absolute cheapest way to set up a power grid. On hanging wires ! There are many places they can go below ground, I've been told so by an NL Power manager when he visited me when I discussed some issues about power in my area. In other places they could use above ground conduit. But hanging wires are the cheapest and fastest way and put more cash in the shareholder's pockets.

Putting power lines under ground is expensive in most places. In NL with its rocky terrain it would be very expensive.
