St. John's, Celtics take quick leads in semifinals

ST. JOHN'S JUNIOR HOCKEY PLAYOFFS

The St. John's Toyota Plaza Caps and Mask Security Celtics each hold 2-0 leads in the best-of-seven Kent's St. John's Junior Hockey League semifinals after weekend play.

The Celtics edged Mount Pearl Mark's Work Wearhouse Blades 5-4 Sunday at the Glacier, while St. John's nipped Conception Bay North Slateworks Stars 4-3 Saturday at Twin Rinks .

The Celtics edged Mount Pearl Mark's Work Wearhouse Blades 5-4 Sunday at the Glacier, while St. John's nipped Conception Bay North Slateworks Stars 4-3 Saturday at Twin Rinks .

Patrick Parfrey's power-play goal at 11:51 of the third period was the difference in the game for St. John's. Roger Pender, Blair Carter, Kyle Smith had the other goals for the winners. Steve O'Keefe set up two goals for the Caps who were down 2-0 after the first period.

Game 3 in the best-of-seven series is set for 8 p.m. Tuesday night at Twin Rinks.

St. John's rebounded with three goals in the second to take a 3-2 lead into the third frame.

Jacob Lewis, Brandon Burry and Tyler Walsh scored for C.B.N.

Goalie Joey Yetman made 33 saves for the Caps, while Stars' Jason Penney turned aside 28 shots.

Lewis was selected the Jungle Jim's player of the game for the visitors, while O'Keefe got the honours for the home team.

Caps 5, Stars 1 (Friday)

The Caps got single tallies from Vincent Paiement, Jon Caul, Kyle McGuirk, Sean Lynch and O'Keefe to beat the Stars in the series opener at the Bay Arena.

Mason Reid and Shane McGrath replied for the Stars.

Yetman made 30 saves to earn the visiting team player of the game honours. Reid got the nod for the home team.

Celtics 5, Blades 4 (Sunday)

Matthew Oates scored twice to lead the Celtics to victory. Kyle Pardy, Justin Leblanc and Justin Kelloway had single markers for the winners who led 3-1 after the first period and 4-2 after two.

Robert Barrett, Jacob Pitcher, Steve Bailey and Luc Deering scored the goals for the Blades.

Andrew Stanford had 26 stops for Celtics, while Nick Rodway made 27 saves for the Blades.

Game 3 is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at O'Hehir Arena.

Celtics 5, Blades 4 (Friday)

In the opener at O'Hehir Arena, homeside player of the game Travis Curtis scored the winner at 13:58 of the third period for the Celtics who tailed 4-2 after two periods. Jeff Hustler, Shawn Roberts and Leblanc had the other goals. Daniel Cadigan had two assists.

Visiting player of the game Jacob Pitcher led the Blades with a pair of goals. Mike Rose scored once.

Goalie David Parsons got the win over counterpart Nick Rodway.

    I was playing for Celtic in 1983 when I was in Montreal. during my time we had a coch by name of Mostafa. please let me know if this is the same Celtict.
